Chapter 33

Dan was waiting by the steps of the Post’s offices when Emma emerged at the end of the day.

‘Hi,’ she said. Then she peered at him. ‘Are you OK?’

‘Yeah, I’m fine.’

‘You don’t look fine.’

‘I’m OK.’

‘I tried to get hold of you earlier. There’s been another murder.’

‘Jo Buttle. I know.’

‘How did you …?’ She broke off but then sighed. ‘You went to meet her, didn’t you? That’s why Ed was acting funny when we found out. He knew you’d gone.’

‘I wish I hadn’t gone. I found her dead and then the police burst in and arrested me.’

‘That’s why Burton hasn’t been giving updates today.’

‘Too busy interviewing me.’

They began to walk down the hill.

‘Are you off bail then?’

‘Nope, still reporting in daily at noon.’ His stomach rumbled loudly. ‘Was Ed still in there?’ He pointed back towards the office.

‘No, he left a while ago. Muttering something about Sainsbury’s.’

‘Excellent. That must mean he’s cooking dinner.’

Emma looked at him awkwardly and Dan raised an eyebrow.

‘What’s wrong?’

‘Is it weird that you find a second source for your story and they get murdered? And you just happen to be there when the police arrive?’

‘No, I think someone is trying to cover up whatever is going on by silencing people who know about it and stopping me from writing the story.’

‘And making you the scapegoat?’

‘The longer the police spent on me, the less time they’re looking for the real killer.’

‘And now they’re looking elsewhere?’

‘They must be if they’re not after me anymore.’ He paused. ‘Shall we head back to the flat? We’ll have a bit of time to chat before Ed gets back.’

Emma grinned. ‘So long as there’s a cup of tea on offer. I’ve not had time for one all afternoon.’

They crossed the road at the traffic lights and began to walk down the hill towards the development where Dan and Ed’s flat was.

‘Are you worried?’

‘Worried about what?’

‘That someone is trying to make you look guilty and they’re doing a bloody good job.’

‘I just need to get stuck into this story. It’s at the heart of everything.’

Their hope of a quiet chat before Ed got back ended when they met him in the street swinging a couple of supermarket carrier bags.

‘Why haven’t you been answering your phone?’ he asked Dan. ‘I’ve been trying to call you all day.’

Dan brought him up to speed about Johanna Buttle’s murder.

Ed puffed out his cheeks. ‘Bloody hell, mate. This is all getting a bit crazy, isn’t it? Maybe you should drop the story and go away on holiday until it’s all over.’

‘Don’t be daft. This is the story of a lifetime. I can’t quit now.’

Ed frowned. He nodded to Emma. ‘You can’t possibly think this is a good idea.’

She shrugged. ‘It’s not a bad idea,’ she said to Dan.

He shook his head and Ed tutted. ‘You’re going to have to stay for dinner, Em. Help me talk some sense into him.’

As they came out of the lift on the second floor into the corridor near the flat, Ed grabbed Dan’s arm, pointing to their front door.
